Ashok Mahakur is a visual artist based in Gurugram, originally from Odisha. With 15 years of experience in practicing art, he has actively participated in numerous exhibitions, seminars, and workshops both in India and internationally. Recognized for his talent, he received the state painting exhibition award in Odisha and the Jajpur Chitrakala award in 2005 and 2006. His artistic expression spans various media, including painting, terracotta, installation, photography, and sculpture.
While his early works were characterized by hyper-realism, Ashok has since refined his style, currently exploring a semi-realistic technique that utilizes newspaper to highlight the significance of knowledge in society. He believes that knowledge is the true wealth and health of humanity, the essential resource that enables us to live fully and enrich our world.
He emphasizes, “Our daily behaviors—how we speak, react, and act—are deeply rooted in human nature, which is shaped by our understanding. Our emotions and actions are expressions of our knowledge. Knowledge encompasses more than just intelligence; it embodies honesty, respect, kindness, truthfulness, and self-belief. It connects our common senses with our deeper intuition. Ultimately, only through wisdom can we contribute positively to our nation, society, friends, family, and all of humanity. So, let your knowledge be an extension of your identity, shaping your face, style, and personality.”
This philosophy drives him to illustrate diverse forms of knowledge through his distinctive painting style.
